5 SILLY THINGS PEOPLE SAY TO HOMESCHOOLERS

I choose to be a stay-at-home parent and a full time teacher during the day to my children and a swim coach at night, but this is something only myself and my spouse decided we can do. So, if I have to hear these five things one more time, I am going to take a mirror out, turn it around to face the parent, and have them answer their own question. I think that people tend to speak before they think, which generally means they didn’t mean to be offensive. Here are some of the most popular questions I get, so if you ever find yourself asking these things, here you go:

1. “WELL, WHAT ABOUT SOCIAL SKILLS?”

Yes. Making sure my child can interact socially is important, but have you ever gone and observed in your child’s classroom for a day? There is interaction with other children their age, and that is about it. Nothing wrong with this, my child has the opportunity to learn other social skills that they will use everyday when they are an adult, paying their contributions to society. Learning how to be polite to others, deal with conflict and other things.

2. “I JUST DON’T THINK I COULD DO IT.”

What is it you can’t do? Take the 8 hours that your child would be in school, and spend it with them, knowing what it is they are learning, knowing where they thrive, and know where they struggle? No one will recognize these signs better than you. Weren’t you there when they learned how to use the potty?

3. “WHAT ABOUT THEIR FUTURE?”

This one gets me everytime. Alright so what is it we are going to do? Because we chose to have a little more control over the curriculum of our own children that means we have destroyed their hopes of the future? This is simply ridiculous as well.. If I live in a metro area that doesn’t have a Christian school, and I have the opportunity to offer a Christian based curriculum as a homeschooler, then that is what I am going to do.

4. “WE HAVE THE BEST DISTRICT, RIGHT?”

I think this is something that just about every homeschool parent has heard. Yes, great we live in an area that offers a great school program. I am not disagreeing. Just because we chose to raise our children slightly different, we have something more in mind for them from their education does not mean I am slapping our school system in the face. I simply have a few other priorities in my child’s educational plan. It is that simple.

5. “AREN’T YOU WORRIED ABOUT EXTRACURRICULARS AND SPORTS?”

Well, no I am not worried about these things. Aren’t your kids involved in “after school” activities? There are several opportunities out there for kids that are home schooled, libraries offer academic-athletes, or sports teams that invite homeschool kids. Just because we are homeschooling does not mean we are raising hermits. Grow up people!
