COMMON RV ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS


So there is lots of shot hand quick abbreviations and acronyms that may spill out every once and awhile when I type or talk. So with the help of the RV Tips and Helpful Hints group on Facebook, I’m going into include the ones I will probably use the most. I will up date this as I need to. Till next time

A.

  • AC = Alternating currently, traditionally 120 volts

  • A/C = Air Conditioning

  • AMP = Amperes

  • APU = Auxiliary Power Unit (Generator) ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid

B.

  • BC = Brake Controller

  • BLM or BOLM = Bureau of Land Management

  • Boondocking = Traditionally Dispersed camping without hookups, usually on BLM or USFS land, not to be confused with Wallydocking

  • BTW = By the way

  • BW = Black Water, waste water from an RV’s onboard toilet

  • Beer = Alcoholic Beverage of choice amongst campers, comes in a wide variety of flavors

C.

  • Cat = Caterpillar

  • CC = Crew Cab Pickup

  • CCC = Cargo carrying capacity

  • CCW = Concealed Carry Permit (Pistol) CWP = Concealed Weapon Permit

  • CF = Camp Fire

  • CG = Camp Ground

  • COE = Army Corps of Engineers

  • CRS = Can’t remember sh** :)

  • C2C = Coast to Coast (Discount Camping)

  • CW = Camping World

D.

  • DC = Direct current as in 12VDC

  • DOT = Dept of Transportation

  • DP = Diesel Pusher

  • D/S = Dump Station

  • DSDP = Dutch Star Diesel Pusher Dually

  • DRW = Dual real wheels

E.

  • EDPM = Ethylene Propylene Diene Monoromer (Rubber Roof)

  • ERS = Emergency Road Service

  • ESP = Extended Service Plan

F.

  • FHU = Full Hook Ups

  • Fiver = Fifth Wheel

  • FMCA = Family Motor Coach Association

  • FR = Forestry Road

  • FRED = Front End Diesel

  • FT = Full Time

  • FurKids/FurBabies = Pets

  • FW = Fresh Water, drinking water stored on-board an RV

  • FYI = For your information

G.

  • GAWR or GAW = Gross Axle Weight Rating

  • GCVW or GCW = Gross Combined Vehicle Weight

  • GPS = Global Positioning Satellite or System

  • GS = Good Sam

  • GTWR = Gross Trailer Weight Rating

  • GVW or GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

  • GW = Grey Water, waste water from shower and sink drains

H.

  • HD = Heavy Duty Truck (1 Ton)

  • HF = Harbor Freight

  • HH = Happy Hour

  • HTH = Hope this Helps

  • HTT = hybrid travel trailer

  • HW = hot water

  • HWH = hot water heater

I.

  • IMO = In my opinion

  • IJS = I’m just saying

  • IP = Internet Provider

  • ISP = Internet Service Provider

J.

  • JB = Just Because

  • JK = Just Kidding

K.

  • KISS = Keep it Simple Stupid

  • KWIM = know what I mean

L.

  • LED = Light Emitting Diode (preferred 12 volt lighting in RVs)

  • LEO = Law Enforcement Official/Officer

  • LD = Light Duty Truck (1/2 Ton)

  • LOL = Laughing Out Loud , Lots Of Luck, Lots Of Love

  • LTVA = Long Term Visitor Area

  • LP or LPG = Liquid Propane Gas

M.

  • MH = Motor Home

  • MD = Medium Duty Truck (3/4 Ton)

  • Mods = Modifications done to your RV

N.

  • NF = National Forest

  • NP = National Park

  • NPS = National Park Service

O.

  • OCCC = Occupant & Cargo Carrying Capacity (replacement for CCC)

  • OEM = Original Equipment by the Manufacturer

  • OMG = Oh my God

  • OP = Original Post, Original Poster

P.

  • PA = Passport America (Discount Camping membership)

  • PUP = Pop-up Tent Trailer

  • PTJ = Power Tongue Jack

  • Pig Tails = Hose used to connect propane tank to regulator

  • PIA = Pain in Ass

  • PITA = Pain In the @ss

  • PMS = Power Management System (most popular one is Progressive Industries)

  • PO = Previous Owner

  • PPA = Passport America (Discount Camping)

  • P/S = Power Steering

  • PSD = Power Stroke Diesel

  • PU = Pickup

  • PW = Pressure Washer

  • ROD – Resorts of Distinction (Campground membership)

  • RV = Recreational Vehicle, used as a general term for all forms of vehicle that have living quarters similar to a home, but in smaller sizes, such as Motorhomes, Travel trailers, Fifth Wheels, Truck Campers, etc… In the specific form, it refers to a motorhome

  • RPI = Resort Parks International (Membership Parks)

  • R/V = Repair Vehicle

S.

  • SB = Short Box or Bed of a Tow Vehicle

  • SCWR = Sleeping Capacity Weight Rating

  • SKP = Escapee (RV Club)

  • Stinky Slinky = The accordion-like hose used to dump the holding tanks on an RV

  • SP = State Park

  • SRW = Single Real Wheel (On a PU)

  • SS = Surround Sound

  • T. TH = Toy Hauler

  • TMI = Too Much Information

  • TV = Tow Vehicle (In context, Television)

  • TP = Toilet paper

  • TPMS = Tire Pressure Monitoring System

  • TOAD = Vehicle towed behind an RV

  • TT = Travel Trailer (or, in context, Thousand Trails, a campground membership club)

  • TWR/TLR = Tongue Weight Rating, Tongue Load Rating

U.

  • USFS = US Forestry Service

  • UPS = Uninterruptable Power Supply

  • UVW or UVWR = Unloaded Vehicle Weight Rating

V.

  • VIN = Vehicle Identification Number

  • VLR = Vertical Load Rating

W.

  • Wallydocking = Overnighting in a Wal-Mart parking lot Wally World = Wal-Mart

  • WDH = Weight distributing hitch

  • WD or W/D = Washer/Dryer

  • WDW = Walt Disney World

  • WES = Water/Electric/Sewer

  • WIFI = Wireless Fidelity (Over the air internet connection)

  • WH = WorkHorse

  • 4DOWN = Vehicle towed with all tires on the ground

  • 4X2 = 2 wheel drive

  • 4X4 = 4 wheel drive

  • 5er/5’r/5ver = Fifth Wheel Trailer

  • 5er = Fifth Wheel RV
